Each miniature portrait
is hand-painted freehand on an actual eggshell.
Marg always starts with the eyes
of the subject and paints outwards from there.
She believes if the eyes aren't
right, nothing is right... These shells can range
in size from the tiniest finch egg to the largest ostrich eggs.
Ostrich shells can be found that
are in excess of 20 inches in circumference, while the little Finch shell is
the approximate size of a jelly-bean.
Unique not only in size, but eggshells
can be found in an endless array of colours and textures.
Emu shells can range from a smoother
texture to a highly textured surface that can be a deep, dark green to brown
or gray tones. The outer layer of the shell being the darkest with each continuing
layer becoming progressively lighter, going through an aqua to a final white
layer.
Eggs from wild bird
populations are never used and should always be left alone.
Shells used in creating the miniature
portraits come from infertile stock.
Used for centuries...
eggshell art has been treasured by collectors worldwide. It
takes on many forms from carved, sculptured, painted, to the
internationally recognized Faberge.
